Holidays at home,
Lying on the couch.
Someone’s in the kitchen,
Smells all around.

Bread’s in the oven but
There’s something sweeter…
The thick scent on my throat
Of chocolate chip cookies.
Oh, there’s also coffee brewing,
Bitter and energetic.

A deep inhale.
Familiar memories
Of being a child again.
One of #Live-Love-Write's Synergy extra challenge's for the week is write an olfactory poem using his article [link] to help.
I like smells, how they revive memories buried deep within. And I really like the smell of food. I love cooking and baking so, of course, food was my inspiration for this one. I hadn't written a poem in a while... Wow...

This is great! I can almost smell Christmas at home.
The best part about this to me is how the poem flows - there's almost this jingle-like quality to the rhythm, almost as if this poem were a Christmas carol!
I enjoy the way you layer the scents, because that is exactly what smelling is really like - at first we smell the bread, and then the chocolate chips underneath, and then the coffee brewing, all mixing together. The ending, where you tie all the scents back to childhood, is quite powerful, as we associate that youthful wonder of Christmas with the poem and that makes the olfactory link much stronger.
One thing though - In the third line of the second stanza, did you mean to say "tick" or "thick"? Because I don't know what a "tick" smell would be, especially not with cookies...
